Caroline's Story

Caroline's video was created by iHearYa! – which is a pilot program from the Hearing Foundation of Canada that encourages teens (grade nine and ten) to educate other teens about the dangers of noise-induced hearing loss.

Professional musicians tour schools with a 45 minute, highly interactive presentation explaining and demonstrating the importance good hearing has for the enjoyment of music – both to create it and to be able to listen to it. They don't preach, they share what's important to them and as a result, teens listen and get involved.

The live event encourages viewers to get involved on the ihearya.org website, to share everything from their own experiences with noise induced hearing loss to their love of music. Kids have shot and edited videos, created poetry and stories; painted pictures and written new lyrics for the iHearYa song.

Visitors are invited to submit their own artwork and experiences, with the best creations winning prizes. Pages on Facebook and a YouTube channel make it easy to show and share creations with friends, parents and teachers and for the content to spread further.

At The Hearing Foundation of Canada, we believe in the power of communication to connect people to each other and the world around them. For most people, the sense of hearing is a big part of that communication. We're concerned at the rising incidence of permanent hearing damage due to noise overexposure, especially among youth, which is why we have developed iHearYa! The Hearing Foundation of Canada is committed to eliminating the devastating effects of hearing loss on the quality of life of Canadians by promoting prevention, early diagnosis, leading-edge medical research and successful intervention.
